Mapping: A Critical Introduction to Cartography and GIS

Jeremy W. Crampton

Format: Paperback

Language: 1

Format: PDF / Kindle / ePub

Size: 14.93 MB

Downloadable formats: PDF

The class begins on-campus and then travels to Washington, Montana, and Wyoming. Normally, if one tries to move the puzzle by applying uneven pressure to the pieces, the puzzle crumbles and pieces slide over each other. Two hundred years later Virgil of Salzburg with Basil and Ambrose agreed that even though it was a delicate subject, it was not necessarily closed to the Church. These three approaches at generalization are important because they try to maintain the integral and holistic character of social geography at the same time that they establish some order and a basis for comparative work.

An appetite for information, a penchant for the peculiar, emphasis upon field work, attachment to the people and language of a particular part of the world, a strong literary bent, a companionship with history and great reliance upon historical modes of explanation (in contrast to the functional, de terministic, and probabilistic modes of the other geographic traditions)—all these serve to identify the work of the student in the area-studies tradition, whatever the areas examined: countries or continents, regions or culture areas.

These maps include the names of plantations not generally known, as well as the Okehocking Indian Reservation and its subsequent subdivision in Willistown. I have appropriated this word from Walt Disney; it was defined in the context of Disney’s EPCOT as “a blending of creative maginations with technical know-how.” See Wolf Schäfer, “The Uneven Globality of Children,” Journal of Social History 38, no. 4 (Summer 2005): 1037, note 6. 7.
