The next ten measures suggest the atmosphere of the moonlit night and Pierrot scurrying to avoid the moonbeam. Think how we would have felt if the same had been done for Rachmaninov or Schoenberg or Moeran or Martinů - almost their entire works in composer-directed or -mentored performances. Composer Focus is in its second season, but has already received a grant from the Cambridge Arts Council, as well as press from the Boston Globe, Musical Intelligencer, and other online periodicals.

Stravinsky himself conducted, by all accounts not well. Although intended for rehearsals rather than public performance, the reduction unwittingly demonstrates the brilliance of Stravinsky's orchestration, which even two keyboards barely suggest.

Coste's music is similar to Sor's, but with a more Romantic French style. The bride sings her farewells to her family, typically in exaggeratedly loud and weepy laments such as “Green Forest.” The wedding ceremony proper begins at the groom’s home, the entourage organized like a quasi-military battalion. His father trained him in music, but he studied law in college. It had the perfect theme for a war-torn continent. Death makes the lovely soul to wander under the sky. He also worshiped Beethoven - he had a marble bust of the great composer overlooking his desk! (Now that's pressure...) Because of this, Brahms's music is very traditional and ordered (he actually wrote it with a quill, which was out of fashion even back then).

Things started to pick up for Nielsen at the turn of the century, and he was commissioned to write many incidental suites and cantatas. In the ballet Le Sacre du printemps (The Rite of Spring, 1913) he departed radically from musical tradition by using irregular, primitive rhythms and harsh dissonances. This was made in May 1930, just a few months after he had given the first performance, also with Ansermet as conductor. Only 9 works survive in phase 2 (op. 201-250) - an 18% survival rate.

With The Royal Ballet's Rite of Spring returning to Covent Garden this Season, we thought we'd take a look at a few of the composer's other wonderful ballet scores: From its eerie opening with chromatic low strings to its glowing and exultant finale, The Firebird is a masterpiece of a ballet score. But closer hearing reveals how neatly these sections are balanced.

Most of these corrections involve the use of the apostrophe. This work is extremely difficult for soloists (violin and cello), especially since they need to have equal skills to perform it properly.

The critics were reserved but positive about Stravinsky's new piece. And it may be that in discussing the merits of Tchaikovsky (whose music was routinely despised by thinking Parisians of the day, but adored by Diaghilev and his friends) they found themselves considering the whole question of Russian style and of what might be a musical equivalent of Pushkin's mock-banal poem, much of which is taken up with heavy sarcasm at the expense of Romantic self-consciousness about art and technique.
